| Jays ink 13th-round pick Matt Dean: report | ||
Alex Anthopoulos began his Monday with the signing of high school shortstop Matt Dean, whom the Toronto Blue Jays chose in the 13th round in the June amateur draft, with likely more to come before the midnight ET deadline. According to ESPN.com, the second-year general manager threw $737,500 at Dean, an 18-year-old high-schooler from Texas who is expected to shift to third base once he packs a few more pounds on his six-foot-three, 190-pound frame. Some say Dean was a potential first-round bat in junior but struggled last summer and this spring under his father Martin at The Colony High School. The right-handed hitter, according to scouts, could have plus power in the major leagues with an easy, natural uppercut to his swing. Defensively, Dean has a strong arm. Dean is the 32nd player from this year’s draft of high schoolers and collegians to sign with the Blue Jays. Many eyes Monday are on pitchers Tyler Beede and Daniel Norris, whom the Blue Jays picked 21st and 74th overall respectively. Beede is touted as having an impressive array of pitches and a major-league ready build. The 18-year-old has a fastball that hits the mid-90 miles per hour and scouts say he has an above-average changeup. He went 7-1 with 114 strikeouts in 56.1 innings last season. Norris, out of Science Hill High School in Tennessee, is an 18 year old with good arm strength and the ability to command his fastball that sits around 92 miles per hour, according to mlb.com. He went 8-2 this past season with a 2.24 earned-run average. Rated 16th on Baseball America’s top 200 draft-eligible list, Norris was said to have scouts drooling this spring. He has the makings of three good pitches with a curveball and changeup in addition to a fastball. Thanks for reading! . Posted in blue-jays-news | Comments Off
